During his life, Ross has camped, run river and ocean trips, climbed mountains, hiked in the tropics, visited several primitive villages in different cultures, and taken motorcycle tours through a wide variety of landscapes.  He firmly believes a photographer must venture out in these ways, to places where beautiful, interesting and aesthetically pleasing scenes and cultures are found, or where the abundance or variety of plant and animal life is stunning, even humbling.  Ross also believes a poor photo excessively edited is usually inferior to a photo well taken and slightly edited. Raised by an artist mother, concepts such as composition, repetition of shapes, leading lines, perspective, and texture influence his photographic choices.  Ross completely agrees with Ansel Adams’ statement, “You don’t make a photograph just with a camera.  You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.” He also said, “Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop".
